Dry-powder and CO2 extinguishers are commonly found in buildings, offices, schools and industrial facilities. Their extinguishing agents and applications differ. Start by reading the manufacturer’s label and instructions for the specific extinguisher.

1. Identifying dry-powder and CO2 extinguishers
Use the label and product documentation to identify the extinguisher. External appearance alone is not sufficient.
First, check thelabelon the extinguisher.
- Some CO2 extinguishers use model codes such as MT3 or MT5, commonly associated with 3 kg or 5 kg of extinguishing agent. Check the actual label and manufacturer’s documentation; the agent mass is different from the total mass of the filled extinguisher.
- Powder extinguishers may carry markings such as MFZ, MFZL, BC or ABC. Confirm the agent, rated fire classes and any propellant details from the specific product documentation.
